I’m listening to “Small Town” and I hear a little bit of restrained Billy Joel. Like, part of it is about provincial, regional, single minded thinking - a hallmark of Billy Joel characters - but also there’s a Springsteen-light vibe and you and Dan need to discover the exact middlepoint where he exists between Springsteen and Billy Joel, and the realms in which Mellencamp has an unbridled idealism that fits neither and hews closer to pop optimism.
Me and Dan bringing out John Mellencamp really led to a lot of important thoughts for me, John, Kate and everyone we know.
